Our Art and Design curriculum is powered by the AccessArt scheme of work to deliver an inclusive, inspiring, and deeply exploratory creative education. We believe that every child has the right to be creative and that the process of making, exploring, and experimenting is just as valuable as the final outcome.
Our Intent is to nurture self-expression, critical thinking, and artistic confidence. Through rich, pathway-based learning, children are given the time and space to think and work like real artists. They explore a diverse range of disciplines—including drawing, sketchbooks, painting, printmaking, collage, and 3D media—while learning about a wide variety of historical and contemporary artists from different cultures and contexts. Ultimately, we aim to ensure that by the time children leave our school, they have discovered an area of the visual arts that personally resonates with them.
At Birstwith Church of England Primary School we value the opportunities that Art and Design offers in stimulating our creativity and imagination, and how this tactile, sensory experience enables us to understand and respond to the world and improve our well-being. We engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art and our curriculum enables children of all abilities to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.
